Introduction
Thanjavur, an ancient town, is located 350 kms south of Madras in south
India. It was once a strong hold of Chola Dynasty and was later on ruled by
Nayaks of Vijayanagara and Maratha rajas. It is exquisitely renowned for its
handicrafts, bronzes and South Indian musical instruments. The greatest
attraction of this town is Brahadeeswarar Temple, an architectural marvel,
was built by king Raja Cholan. The other marvellous temples of Thanjavur
depict the glory of the rulers, who made these temples built and also

Attractions in Thanjavur Sri Brahadeeswarar temple Built
by the great Chola king, Raja Raja 1 in the tenth century AD, Sri
Brahadeeswarar temple is an eminent and phenomenal example of Chola dynasty.
The temple stands within a fort, whose walls are later additions, built in
the 16th century.
The Palace
The palace, which is built close to the temple, is a vast building of
masonry. The vast monument was built partly by the Nayaks and Marathas
around 1550 AD.
Art Gallery The
palace houses a number of granite and bronze statues of the Chola period.
Schwatz church
It was a creation of Raja Serfoji, as a token of love, for the Rev CV
Schwatz. It was built in 1770 AD in the palace garden.
